What is an Annual Fire Safety Statement?
An Annual Fire Safety Statement (AFSS) is a certificate acknowledging your premises has undergone all necessary inspection, testing, maintenance and repairs in compliance with the listed essential fire safety measures and standards of performance.
The inspections and testing of all essential fire safety measures need to be carried out within the period prior to the date on which the annual fire safety statement is issued. The persons who carry out an assessment must inspect and verify the performance of each fire safety measure being assessed.

Do I need an Annual Fire Safety Statement?
Yes. Under the Environmental Planning and Assessment Regulation 2000 - NSW Legislation(NSW EP&A Act 2000), Local councils and NSW Fire Brigade require all essential fire safety measures including any fire engineering solutions to be checked and certified in accordance with the Australian Standards.
Building Owners must also submit your Annual Fire Safety Statement to Council and the NSW Fire Brigades to be acknowledged and documented. Failure to give an annual fire safety statement to the council within the time prescribed, will constitutes fines.

Prior to 1st October 2017, a building manager / fire services provider could sign the AFSS, but this is no longer the case; all essential fire safety measures must be endorsed by CFSP and the AFSS signed and submitted by the Building Owner.
